It would be nice to create random islands surrounded by water on the board

neither side can cross water or tall mountains. the terrain would be an optional background.

this could be a cool idea where both would have to agree

Since the whole idea of gameplay revolves around building bridges , perhaps "water hazards" should only prevent people from placing poles *on* water, but allow bridges *over* water if they're in range?

I like the idea of the water bridges where there are neutral already formed poles.

The idea of adding more layers to game by use of terrain is incredibly novel! A well designed map - or many maps that alternate between games - could also have small 1-3 hole islands that would allow for vast bridge networks, and then be points of contention between players. This thematically syncs with the core game, but shifts "links" to "infrastructure" which is pretty cool in concept.
